Why your website doesn’t show up immediately once it’s live

Once we make a website live, we create an account for it in Google Search Console. This lets us submit a “sitemap” of the website to Google for their robots to explore. Once the Google robots have found, read, and “indexed” the site, then the site will show up as relevant results of a Google search. This process, however, takes some time; often a couple of weeks.

The upside to this delay, is that you have a chance to make a lot of tweaks even after the website is live, to fix typos, add new blog posts, etc. Always keep in mind: A website is a growing thing. It’s not like a printed brochure that has to be perfect before it goes to print.

Once the robots index your site, you can see what they found to be the most important pages by visiting:

site:yoursite.com

It is also important to remember that the Google robots are designed to visit your site repeated on a schedule in order to keep up to date with your latest posts and changes. In fact, the extent to which your site changes on a regular basis, called “freshness metric” can influence the ranking of your site in results relative to your competitors. So keeping up with new blog posts (like this one) is a good way to help improve your site ranking and visibility.
